There are many articles nowadays which say that we must be careful about what we eat, always make sure to stay away from food made with GMOs and artificial ingredients, etc. But are we actually care when it comes to drinks, too? Even some of the most health-conscious people choose to keep alcohol in their diets. No one wants to stop using it. Drinking alcohol in excess is detrimental to your health and it’s a well-known fact, but even one drink every now and then may do you harm. Believe it or not, that’s all because of its ingredients.
Foods and non-alcoholic beverages are required to contain a list of ingredients, but beer is not.
Michele Simon, author of Appetite for Profit, recently discussed this matter in her own opinion:
“Ingredient labeling on food products and non-alcoholic beverages is required by the Food and Drug Administration. But a whole other federal agency regulates beer, and not very well. The Department of Treasury — the same folks who collect your taxes — oversees alcoholic beverages. That probably explains why we know more about what’s in a can of Coke than a can of Bud.”
There are many harmful ingredients that can be commonly found in beer and this article is going to present to you some of them which may surprise you!
- GMO Corn Syrup
- GMO Corn
- High Fructose Corn Syrup
- Fish Bladder
- Propylene Glycol
- Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
- “Natural” Flavors
- GMO Sugars
- Caramel Coloring
- Insect-Based Dyes
These ingredients should be the ones to make you think again when you want a bottle of these six common beers:
Budweiser is advertised almost everywhere, but it’s true that it contains genetically modified (GMO) corn. Experimental GMO rice was discovered in Budweiser beer in an experiment from 2007.
- Corona Extra
People usually use this beer while relaxing on a beach, but Corona Extra contains GMO corn syrup and Propylene Glycol, and these ingredients precisely are believed to be harmful to your health.
- Michelob Ultra
For those on a low-carb diet, Michelob Ultra is a popular choice, but it contains a genetically modified sweetener known as GMO dextrose.
- Pabst Blue Ribbon
This beer has been found to contain both GMO corn and GMO corn syrup. The company tried to defend themselves and has stated that their corn syrup is “special.”
- Miller Coors
Miller Coors uses corn syrup in their beers, but they’ve also stated that using GMOs gives their beer a milder and lighter-bodied flavor. This includes Miller Lite and Coors Light.
6. Miller Lite
This is another very popular beer in America that contains GMOs. Miller Lite contains GMO corn and corn syrup. It’s “GMO time”.
If you’re a beer fan, make sure you’re choosing beers that are GMO-free. Certified organic beers such as Bison, Pinkus, Samuel Smith’s Organic Ale, or Wolaver’s are always a good choice. These beers are required by law not to contain GMOs. Non-organic GMO-free beers are Heineken, Amstel Light, Ayinger, and the Sierra Nevada. Try to research more about the beers you usually drink, because it might be time to find a new one if your favorite drink contains harmful hidden ingredients.
